With over 45 years of youth development experience, LAYC has developed a series of professional development workshops aimed at boosting knowledge and skills in the areas of positive youth development, cultural competency, and case management. LAYC Training Academy provides on-site training to staff and volunteers, conveying best practices and promoting a conceptual foundation for social services organizations.

All training workshops are provided using a mix of visual and kinesthetic techniques aimed at engaging participants with different learning styles. Workshops are designed for groups of eight to 20 people and are led by a team of highly experienced youth workers with Master’s-level education (social work, counseling, and education) and/or over eight years of experience serving high-risk youth. Our diverse group of trainers reflect the demographics of the youth we serve and can provide training in English and Spanish.

Positive Youth Development

Workshop Description: A core component of LAYC’s organizational culture is the Positive Youth Development (PYD) approach to guide staff-youth interactions. PYD is a strength-based approach that 1) places value on young people regardless of their situation and 2) emphasizes fully preparing young people to succeed and contribute to their futures now, rather than focusing on risky behaviors. In 2012, LAYC developed its own PYD curriculum and began training staff of all levels both within the organization and externally. This curriculum is designed to encourage collaboration across departments, strengthen teams, and build a cohesive and comprehensive model of youth development.

The training may be offered as an abbreviated course of 3 days (24 hours) or a full course of 6 days (48 hours)

LGBTQ Ally Training

Workshop Description: According to a GLSEN School Climate Report (2013), 85% of LGBTQ youth felt harassed in the past year and 56% felt unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation. Youth should feel secure, and accepted when accessing our programs and services, and yet, we don’t always have the tools or the language to be a true ally to our LGBTQ youth. Latin American Youth Center provides on-site training regarding best practices in creating safe spaces. The LGBTQ Ally Workshop is designed to support organizational change, increasing safety and understanding for youth and staff. Each activity within the workshop builds upon the one prior, leading to best practices as an ally.

Length of Workshop: 4 hours (including breaks)

Group Size: 15-20 participants
