Last year, LAYC became one of 95 local Charity Partners of the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM). One of the largest marathons in the US, MCM is known as “The People’s Marathon,” as it doesn’t offer prize money. Its mission is to promote physical fitness, generate community goodwill, and showcase the US Marine Corps. The MCM is so popular that for the past four years it has been oversubscribed. Since the number of runners is limited to 30,000, all runners must enter a lottery to participate. If runners are unable to gain entry through the lottery system, they may secure a space through one of the MCM Charity Partners.

Sixty runners were part of LAYC’s team last year; 20 ran the marathon, and 40 ran the MCM 10K, which is held annually in conjunction with the MCM. Brittany Trail, a marathoner who ran for Team LAYC last year, said: “We are all a part of this community, and we should all help when and where we can. I am fortunate enough to have a very large support network. It makes me happy to be able to bring my network to others who may not have those same resources. By raising money for LAYC, I’m able to help provide to others what I am lucky enough to have.”

The 43rd Marine Corps Marathon will be held on October 28, 2018. Runners can register as a part of LAYC’s team for $15 and must pledge to raise $500 if they run the marathon or $300 if they run the 10K. (LAYC has one of the lowest pledge requirement rates; some charities require their runners to pledge $1,500 or more.) Staff have been conducting outreach to recruit runners for LAYC, through social media such as Facebook and listserv posts, tabling at events such as the NBC4 Health Expo and the UnidosUS annual conference, and through partnership development with a few local companies that are assembling a team of staff to run for LAYC.
