January was national mentoring month and, at LAYC/MMYC in Silver Spring, we are always
excited to celebrate the growing group of deeply caring and skilled adult volunteer mentors,
mentees, and families that make up our community based, one-to-one mentoring program,
‘Mentor Forward’.

Mentor Forward launched in early 2019 and has since made waves providing quality
evidence-based mentoring, and youth- and family-centered programming. What a year it has been!
Mentor Forward helps middle and high school aged youth reach their full potential by
establishing a sincere and trusting partnership between the young person and a consistent adult.

Much like our mentors, our youth – many of whom are first and second generation students –
come from diverse backgrounds and carry with them personal hopes and aspirations for
their future.

While the developing strengths of the individual relationships within our program are significant, the monthly match activities and quarterly family activities we host foster a truly special sense of community within our program. This is where Mentor Forward shines!

Our Pupusa Making Party on National Pupusa Day, held last November, is just one example of an
activity inspired by our youth and led our very own mentor families. In this fashion, we have
mobilized our own participants and communities.

This program would not be possible without the dedication of our volunteer mentors and local
communities. To learn more about how you can become a mentor, or how your business or group
can host an activity with Mentor Forward, please contact alma@layc-dc.org and/or
