Here to Stay banner

On January 20, our country will inaugurate its 45th president. This will be in important day in U.S. history, and in our city, it will be a day of heightened awareness about our future. There are likely to be many protests, for and against the new administration. Who knows what that day will bring—as the District will welcome people of all perspectives and values for the inauguration events and the Women’s March on Washington the following day.

To support our youth and their families through the day, LAYC will open on Inauguration Day. We will offer participants and their families a peaceful space to be with each other and dream about a better world.

While LAYC’s staff have decided to host this space, the program during the day will be led by youth in LAYC programs as follows:

11 a.m. to Noon: Breakfast, mingling, and welcome
Noon to 1 p.m.: A celebration of youth leadership in the coming years with the Latino Youth Leadership Council, and a viewing of the inauguration speech with some facilitated dialogue.
1 to 2 p.m.: An open mic facilitated by youth from Words, Beats, and Life.
2 to 3 p.m.: A dance party, DJ’ed by a youth from the LAYC Career Academy, and lunch

Throughout the day, our guests will be able to contribute their dreams to our #HereToStay banner, which will hang outside our building in Columbia Heights.

We look forward to building our youth’s voices and their critical thinking skills about the days to come.

This event is free and open to LAYC youth, families, and friends.
