It’s time for our annual coat drive supporting the youth and families in our community. This year, we are pleased to partner with the LAYC Career Academy, YouthBuild, and Next Step Public Charter Schools to identify youth in need. And, we’re thankful for members of LAYC’s Associate Board who are collecting coats at their respective offices.
The items will keep hundreds of youth warm this winter, including students at the LAYC Career Academy, YouthBuild, and Next Step Public Charter Schools; and homeless and runaway youth who access services at LAYC’s Drop-in Center. The need among these groups is greater than ever. Just last month, over 50 youth sought housing resources at LAYC’s Drop-in Center. At the LAYC Career Academy and YouthBuild, all students are low-income and face some level of poverty. At the Next Step Public Charter School, a large population of students come from other countries. Many of these students come to the U.S. without warm coats, as they are accustomed to living in much warmer climates, and they are financially unable to purchase winter items. Often times, we see students come to school in light jackets or sweatshirts during the winter month because they cannot afford winter coats.
Please take a look in your closet and donate any coats in new or gently used condition to the youth in your community who need them. Help us reach our goal of collecting 350 coats! There is a special need for men’s small sizes. Sweaters and winter accessories are also welcome, including scarves, hats, and gloves.
Bring new or gently used coats, sweater and winter accessories to LAYC’s Hope’s Closet through October 28. Drop off hours are Wednesdays 9–10 a.m. and Fridays 4–6 p.m., or by appointment with Carolyn Greenspan, firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you so much for sharing the warmth!
