Katie Piura

by Elizabeth Mohler, Clinical Supervisor

Katie Piura joined the Behavioral Health team just over a year ago, and has already made her mark as one of the first bilingual Spanish/English Community Based Interventions (CBI) provider in the District of Columbia.

CBI services are intensive, time-limited mental health services for youth ages 6–21 with serious emotional problems and their families. As our CBI Counselor, Katie takes services to youth and family wherever they are: at home, school, or in the community, and always brings along her compassion, intelligence, and determination, along with her backpack full of engaging activities and useful resources. She has great instincts and strong clinical skills. She is an expert in bringing together teams of formal and informal supports to empower families and move young people toward their goals. Katie has been acknowledged by the families she has served as always being kind, supportive, and encouraging.

Before joining our team, Katie interned at the LAYC Career Academy as part of her Master’s program in social work. She is a graduate of Catholic University and received her Bachelor’s degree in social work with a minor in psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She decided during her internship that she wanted to continue her career at LAYC, and we are so happy to have her!

In addition to her clinical work, Katie also focuses on the “big picture” by volunteering her time with the DREAMER and Community Organizing for Racial Equity staff committees. The summer before she started working with us, she served as an international program associate with Community and Family Services International in Manila, Philippines. While there, she was involved in community organizing for reproductive health education. Katie is a passionate advocate for the rights of young people and determined in her pursuit of social justice for under-served families.

And if that weren’t enough, Katie is a consummate team player. She is always ready to help out her colleagues and keeps us on track with celebrating birthdays and other important occasions. We can always rely on her for a smile and a positive word, and her laughter warms up our offices.

We are very fortunate to have Katie as a member of our team. Thank you Katie, for everything you do!
