It’s back-to-school season, and LAYC wants to give a special thanks to the many donors who came together to support our youth as they started the school year.

For the second summer in a row, our friends from the McDonald’s Hispanic Owner-Operator Association (MHOOA) and Martin Brower came together to collect back-to-school backpacks. This year, LAYC received 150 brand-new, brightly colored JanSport backpacks for students at Francis L. Cardozo Education Campus in D.C., LAYC’s Community Schools consortium, and students in Prince George’s County public schools! In addition, LAYC also received $3,000 in support for our education programs to fill up those backpacks with critical school supplies for each student. The donation will ensure LAYC youth get off to a stylish and well-prepared start for the 2017-2018 school year. LAYC hosted representatives from MHOOA and Martin Brower for a special event giving students the opportunity to share their personal thanks. In return, students heard motivating words from each of our guests inspiring them to never give up on their educational and career goals. Special thanks to Giuseppe Giaimo, owner/operator of the Giaimo Management Corp for organizing the donation.

At LAYC Maryland Multicultural Youth Centers, Riverdale, our team held a backpack distribution celebration as part of their Community Schools partnership with United Way and William Wirt Middle School in Prince George’s County. On Tuesday, August 15, LAYC/MMYC, with United Way of the National Capital Area, ABC7, News Channel 8, and DC United came out to William Wirt Middle School to host a Stuff the Bus Event! More than 131 families were in attendance, and 200 backpacks were filled with school supplies. Students were also invited to write motivational quotes to give to their peers and other Riverdale students. Finally, students were treated to a visit from DC United player Patrick Mullins, who took time to share some inspirational words for the new school year.

Thank you, donors! Because of your support, LAYC students are ready for another successful academic year!
