LAYC's Afro-Latin Percussion Ensemble

By Kevin Espinosa

Comprised of youth ranging from 14 to 18 years of age, LAYC’s Afro-Latin Percussion Ensemble is the newest addition to BeatHeadz, the Art + Media House (AMH) music program.

Ensemble members:

Jonathan Avila
Carlos Juarez
Hector Lopez
Xavier Zietarski
Jefferson Rosales

These young musicians come from all over Washington DC and have chosen music as their way to focus their energy and remain productive in all aspects of their lives. The percussion class at AMH provides them with a means to learn their cultural history through the tradition of percussion, a vital aspect of both African American and Latin American culture. These students have not only learned this history but have pushed their creativity to develop their own personal playing styles for their future in the performing arts.

They’re performing all over town!
