LAYC's Art & Media House has been selected as "one of the top arts and humanities-based programs in the country serving youth beyond the school-hours" by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities.
The Art & Media House was selected as one of 50 semifinalists from across the country as part of the 2007 Coming Up Taller Awards.
More than 350 nominations were received, representing organizations from 46 states and the District of Columbia. The semifinalists were selected by the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities and its partner agencies, The Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities.
The Coming Up Taller Awards recognize and support outstanding community arts and humanities programs that celebrate the creativity of America's young people, provide them learning opportunities and chances to contribute to their communities.
Marie Moll, Director of the Art & Media House, said, "It's really gratifying to have our work recognized nationally. At the youth center, we believe strongly in the power of art to build and strengthen community. Being named a semifinalist is really a recognition of the wonderful young people we are fortunate to work with every day. Their creativity, energy and excitement about art is really exceptional and is what allows us to do what we do."
A national jury is reviewing the semifinalists and expects to notify winners by the end of June.
