LAYC’s MARYLAND MULTICULTURAL YOUTH CENTERS AND UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND’S ENGAGED UNIVERSITY HOLD MASTER PEACE COMMUNITY GARDEN PARTY SATURDAY APRIL 21ST
AT CENTER FOR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIP IN RIVERDALE
On Saturday, April 21, 2007, one of the most beautiful days this spring, the Maryland Multicultural Youth Centers (MMYC) and the University of Maryland’s Engaged University hosted the First Annual Master Peace Garden Party from 12:30 p.m-4:30 p.m. at the Center for Educational Partnership located at 6200 Sheridan Street in Riverdale, Maryland. The event also celebrated Earth Day and Global Youth Service Day 2007, with planting, games and good food.
The Master Peace Community Garden is a neighborhood and youth-focused project designed to foster community health and neighborhood development. Any person in the community who wants to help plant fruits, vegetables or flowers in the garden is welcome to do so during the spring and summer. Applications for garden plots are still available! To kick things off, a seed-exchange and gardening demonstrations were part of the activities on April 21st.
"What a great party,” said Luisa Montero, MMYC’s Managing Director. “The Master Peace garden is a fun way to engage the community in a healthy activity that people of all ages can enjoy. Last summer, we teamed with the Engaged University to offer a gardening and nutrition program to local students who gave the garden its name. The young people loved it and we all thought it would be great to build on that initial effort with the Master Peace Garden this year."
