Youth Employment and Academic Readiness

Overview
The Youth Employment and Academic Readiness Program opened its doors in Montgomery County in October, 2005 thanks to the support of the Montgomery County Department of Economic Development through a Workforce Investment Act grant.
YEAR Program
The program targets out-of-school and in-school youth to offer the following:
- Case Management
- Group, family, and one-on-one counseling
- GED Instruction
- Job readiness training
- Job training certificates
- Computer training
- Summer internship placement
- Career exploration workshops
- Internships and job placements
- Art and recreational activities
Program Highlights:
- YEAR moved to its new home in downtown Silver Spring in August 2006
- YEAR has successfully conducted outreach to over 266 youth
- MMYC has established a strong partnership with Wheaton High School
- Job readiness workshops have been conducted in Kennedy High School, Blair High School, and Watkins Mill High School
- MMYC recently secured a contract to provide job training and financial literacy workshops to juveniles at the Montgomery County Clarksburg Detention Facility
- Strong alliances with businesses such as State Farm, Kaiser Permanente, and other organizations have been established for youth and directly resulted in internship placements for 54 youth
- In the summer of 2006, 12 adjudicated youth worked with a local muralist to produce a beautiful mural, which is prominently displayed at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Rockville, Maryland.
