Maryland Multicultural Youth Centers

OVERVIEW
The Maryland Multicultural Youth Centers (MMYC), a member of the Latin American Youth Center’s family of organizations, began offering programs in Maryland in the summer of 2005.  Based on its thirty year experience in the District of Columbia, MMYC is working towards replicating LAYC’s proven youth development model in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties.  Since opening its doors, MMYC has served over 550 Maryland youth and families.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVES
In line with LAYC’s vision and mission, MMYC seeks to help youth become successful and happy young adults by providing a comprehensive set of programs to meet them and their families where they are and help them build the skills they need for future success.  MMYC’s programs are designed to span the entire youth engagement continuum, which helps youth get their basic needs met, have the opportunity to learn practical life and work skills, and increase engagement in their communities.

Children and youth participating in MMYC will:

  • Increase their academic achievement and commitment to education;
  • Acquire career skills and knowledge for employment and long-term career development;
  • Increase their awareness of the community and commitment to community improvement;
  • Improve their ability to initiate and sustain positive solutions;
  • Adopt healthy lifestyles and habits and avoid risky behaviors; and
  • Increase their ability to find positive solutions to the immediate needs of life.

ADVISORY COUNCIL
MMYC has recruited a talented and committed group of Maryland leaders to advise its strategic direction in Maryland.  Representatives from the private, public, and non-profit sectors have committed to assisting MMYC in its mission is to support Maryland youth and their families in their determination to live, work, and study with dignity, hope, and joy.  MMYC’s Advisory Council informs and takes direction from the LAYC’s board of directors.
