Teen Health Promoters Program

The Teen Health Promoters program of the Latin American Youth Center, trains students enrolled in the 10th and 11th grades to staff a teen clinic at Mary’s Center and Health Street at Unity Health Care, Upper Cardozo Clinics.

Participants will be exposed to various topics focused in health promotion and disease prevention and health careers. A few of these health-related topics include teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and diabetes. They will be trained to take patients' basic vital signs and receive CPR/first aide certification. In addition to work in the clinics, participants will co-facilitate educatinal training on HIV/AIDS with their peers and engage in outreach and community events.

This program creates a welcoming environment for teen patients and exposes the teen health promoters to the health field, trains them to become professionals in a clinical setting, and to serve as role models in the community while gaining valuable experience.

Parent Involvement
Parents must attend an orientation at the beginning of the program. Parents will obtain educational finance resource information for their children through a College Prep, Financial Aid workshop, and the IDA account.
