Jose Argueta

High School: Cesar Chavez Public Charter High School for Public Policy; Capitol Hill Campus

Selected College: Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech)

Jose made his entrance into the Upward Bound Program during his sophomore year and has not looked back.  His personality is infectious and has made quite the impact on our program.  Outside of Upward Bound, Jose has lent his talents to the C.O.R.E. Club, Youth and Government League, Cesar Chavez Yearbook Committee, and the Boy Scouts of America.  In the Fall Jose will enroll in Virginia Tech where he will pursue a major in Computer Engineering.

Chauntini Clark

High School: Washington Math Science & Technology High School

Selected College:  North Carolina Central University

Chauntini joined the Upward Bound family her sophomore year and has been an active participant ever since.  Chautini is a participant who takes the opportunity to use her present experiences as pivotal “teachable moments”.  A Hoop Dreams scholar, Chauntini has been an active participant on the Swim and Basketball teams and recently served as a life guard this summer.  In the Fall, Chauntini plans to attend North Carolina Central University where she plans to major in Criminal Justice.

Marsha Collins

Marsha is an Upward Bound veteran.  She joined the program the summer before she entered the ninth grade.  Marsha is an outstanding student at The Cesar Chavez Public Charter High School where she maintains a 3.4 GPA, all the while having participating in a myriad of co-curricular activities.  Of note, Marsha has been on the Cesar Chavez Basketball and Dance Teams, a member of the Outdoor Recreational Environmental Club (CORE Club); and a member of the Cesar Chavez High School Debate Team, to name a few.  Marsha has hopes of becoming a nurse and will take a closer step to this goal by enrolling in an area university in the Fall.

Sharde’ Curley

High School: Friendship Edison Collegiate Academy

Sharde’ has been a constant member of the UB family for four years now.  She began her Upward Bound Career the summer before her freshman year of high school.  With hopes of becoming a journalist Sharde’ writes for her school newspaper and is active with her church media industry.  Sharde’ has also proved herself academically as well. She has consistently maintained honor roll status and earned an academic scholarship to Trinity University where she will enroll in the Fall. There she plans in Mass Communications and later pursue a career in journalism.

Anna Feliciano

High School: Bell Multicultural High School

Selected College: Trinity University

Anna started Upward Bound early in her high school career while she was just a freshman.  In the summer of 2006, Anna was chosen among a national pool of applicants to attend the Strive program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA.  In addition to this summer program, Anna has been an active participant on the Senior Activities Planning Board, Robotics Club, and The Latin American Youth Center Youth LEAD Program.  In the Fall Anna plans to attend Trinity University where she will pursue a major in business.

Ashley Harris

High School: School Without Walls

Selected College: Trinity University

Ashley has been with the Upward Bound program for four years now.  An Upward Bound veteran, Ashley entered the program the summer of her eighth grade year.  Not only has Ashley been a dedicated member of the Upward Bound Program, but she has danced for numerous years with the D.C. Youth Ensemble, maintained membership in the National Society of Black Engineers, and interned at Stevens Elementary School.  Recently Ashley received a couple of scholarships including the Horatio Alger, Star, and Prince Hall Scholarships.  In the Fall Ashley plans to enroll in Trinity University where she will major in Education.

Dalila Huarcacho

Wilson Senior High School

Selected College: Montgomery Community College, Major in science (pre-medicine).

Dalila has been a member of the UB family for three years and surprised all of us by graduating from high school one year early. She stood out in her school as an ROTC charity project leader, and has participated in numerous science-enrichment programs, including one in the National Institutes of Health.

Nicole Jackson

High School: Friendship-Edison Collegiate Academy

Selected College: Georgia State University

Nicole has been a loyal member of the UB family since the summer before her ninth grade year.  She is indeed a four year survivor!  Nicole is an accomplished student and has maintained honor roll status her entire high school career all the while attaining excellent grades on the collegiate level as well.  Outside of Upward Bound Nicole has been involved with the Urban Alliance Program and interned with Children’ Hospital.  Nicole has a dream of becoming a Pediatrician and will begin her path to realizing this dream by enrolling in Georgia State University where she will major in Biology with a Pre-Med emphasis.

Monique Love

High School: Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School

Selected College: Virginia Commonwealth University

Four Years later and Monique Love is still with Upward Bound.  Her passion and enthusiasm for the program are apparent from the first moment that you come into contact with her.  Monique is a team player and it is quite evident in her participation on the Indoor Track and Cross Country Teams, Management Positions on the Roosevelt Football and Girls& Boys Basketball Teams, and her membership in the National Honor Society.  Monique has dreams of becoming a physical therapist and will take one step further in actualizing this dream upon her enrollment in Virginia Commonwealth Univesity in the Fall.

Michael Ludgardo

High School: School Without Walls High School

Selected College: George Mason University

Michael has been a faithful UB participant since his sophomore year of high school.  Since his matriculation into the program he has been very dedicated to the program.  A New Futures Scholar, Michael has played on the Woodrow Wilson Senior High School Junior Varsity Football team and been an active participant in his community by participating in several community initiatives.  In the Fall Michael plans to attend George Mason University and major in Political Science/International Relations with hopes of one day attending Law School.

Jeovanny Paz

High School: Benjamin Banneker Academic High School

Jeovanny is one of our longest standing members of the program. He started the Upward Bound as a rising freshman.  Since then he has consistently maintained his dedication to UB. Jeovanny is quite the accomplished student.  A New Futures Scholar, Jeovanny is currently the Captain of his Soccer Team, a tutor at Bruce Monroe Elementary School, and has made the Honor Roll and Principal’s Commendation List multiple times.  In the Fall, Jeovanny plans to attend George Mason University where he plans to major in Mechanical Engineering.

Julian Peters

High School: Woodrow Wilson Senior High School

Selected College: Miami University of Ohio

Julian enrolled in Upward Bound during his sophomore year of high school.  Julian is a very introspective student.  Although quiet in nature, he makes his presence known in other ways.  He has been quite involved during his high school career. He has played intramural basketball, served as a tutor at Brightwood Elementary School and been an active member of MECCA: A Political Awareness Club.  Julian plans to major in English upon his matriculation into the Miami University of Ohio where he will be named a Diversity Scholar.

Arlette Philogene

High School: Woodrow Wilson Senior High School

Selected College: Trinity University

Arlette has been with the Upward Bound Program since her freshman year.  A determined young lady at heart, she has hopes of one day opening a non-profit that specifically serves the Haitian community by providing them with social and academic services.  While working to attain this dream Arlette has volunteered in her community, and played on her schools tennis and lacrosse teams.  In the Fall, Arlette plans to attend Trinity University where she will major in Psychology and minor in Spanish.

Hedy Romero

Selected College: University of California-Los Angeles

Hedy Romero has proved to be a leader throughout her high school career.  Her drive and determination are guaranteed to take her far.  She has won countless awards and is involved with many organizations.  Of note, she is a recipient of the 2007 Hispanic Heritage Youth Award-Bronze Medallion for Community Service, winner of the Lideres de Hoy National Essay Contest, and a finalist for the DC Telemundo and NBC 4 2006 Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest.  At the Latin American Youth Center she has participated in Youth LEAD & the Teen Health Promoters Programs.  Outside of UB she has been an active participant in her Student Government, Debate Team, and volunteered at the Hispanic College Fund.  Hedy makes sure to set goals in her present in order to achieve future successes.  In the Fall she will enroll at the University of California-Los Angelese where she will purse a dual degree in English and Sociology and minor in Chicano Studies.

Joel Sanchez

High School: Bell Multicultural Senior High School

Joel began his Upward Bound Career during his sophomore year of high school.  Since then he has excelled academically and has involved himself in academic and social activities.  Of note, Joel has been involved with the Bell Senior High School Pre-College program where he has taken Engineering courses at area universities.  He has also been an active participant on his senior activities board.  Joel has aspirations to become an engineer.  In the Fall he will attend Bradley University where he will pursue this major.

Jessica Soriano

High School: Cesar Chavez Public Charter High School for Public Policy; Capitol Hill Campus

Selected College: Penn State-University Park Campus

Jessica began her Upward Bound Career during the Fall of her freshman year.  During her time in UB Jessica has seen the program morph and change.  Jessica is known for not only being very vocal and outspoken, but proactive about change.  Of note, Jessica is currently a member of the CORE Club and Youth & Government Leagues.  She has also received several honors and achievements including the Upward Bound and Cesar Chavez Student of the Year Awards, being selected as one of four finalist in the NBC 4 Telemundo Hispanic Heritage Essay Competition, and she consistently maintains a presence on the Honor Roll.  In the Fall Jessica will enroll at Penn State University and study International Affairs.

Cindy Vasquez

High School: Cesar Chavez Public Charter High School for Public Policy; Parkside Campus

Selected College: Goucher College

Cindy is one of the most recent additions to the Class of 2007.  She joined the program in the Spring of her junior year.  Although she is the newest addition to the class, she has quickly assertd herself as a valuable asset to the Class of ’07!  She is quite the accomplished young lady having participated in a myriad of extra-curricular activities.  During her high school career Cindy has served as a tutor/counselor for the Oyster Creative Services Program elementary school aged students, Secretary of the senior class, and member of the prom committee.  This summer Cindy was also a finalist for the NBC 4 Telemundo Hispanic Heritage Essay Competition where she received a $700.00 scholarship.  Cindy will enroll in Goucher College in the Fall where she will major in International Relations.

Ruben Velasquez

High School: School Without Walls

Selected College: Morgan State University

Ruben is one of the longest standing members of the Class of 2007!  He started Upward Bound the summer before he attended high school.  A New Futures Scholar, Ruben has been an active participant within The Latin American Youth Center and in his high school community.  He is a member of the Hip Hop Dance Team, The National Society of Black Engineers, and the Student Government Association.  In the Fall Ruben will enroll in Morgan State University where he will study Marketing/Fashion Merchandising.  Ruben has a goal of one day opening his own clothing store which will no doubt feature his premier clothing line.
