AmeriCorps

The AmeriCorps Program places members within local Elementary Schools to serve as educational aides to encourage academic achievement  among students performing below grade level.  Through the placement of In-School and After-School programs , as well as summer programs, the members become tutors, mentors and role models to youth.  Duties of AmeriCorps members include the promotion of academic success through individualized tutoring plans for students enrolled in In-School and After School programs.  Members also conduct workshops and teach classes focusing on building self-esteem and wise decision making in efforts to encourage abstinence among youth. Service is also an integral component of the program throughout the year, members give back to the community through neighborhood beautification projects and trip to the food bank.  The mission of the AmeriCorps program is to implement new programs, as well as augment existing ones, in DC public schools to meet the needs of the community.

Parent Involvement

The AmeriCorps program strives to involve parents as much as possible in their child’s education, believing that this approach promotes academic success among youth.  Throughout the year, events are organized in order to foster relationships between LAYC staff, youth and parents, such as Parent Orientations, Health Fairs, field trips and parent focus groups.
