The Latin American Youth Center's Project STRIPES is a social outreach club for self-identifying Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (GLBTQ) youth. The goal of the program is to provide a safe supportive space for youth to engage in self-discovery and reflection. Participants will explore issues that affect GLTBQ youth, such as coming-out, embracing non-traditional gender roles, coping with and challenging homophobia, and engaging in healthy relationships.

In addition, Project STRIPES participants are trained to provide their peers with HIV, STI, pregnancy prevention education, and to raise community awareness around GLBTQ issues.  Social events are used as a platform for innovative educational outreach campaigns. These events are youth-led and aim to normalize HIV and STI testing and safer sex practices.

Project STRIPES is a year long program that accepts new participants on an on-going basis.  During weekly meetings, program participants work to "earn their STRIPES" by demonstrating knowledge, skills, and competencies in each of the following core areas: Sharing, Taking Responsibility, Respect, Identity, Participation, Educational Achievement, and Self-acceptance (STRIPES).
