The NCLR Upward Bound Program is one of the national, federally-funded Upward Bound educational program designed to prepare students for post-secondary education. Upward Bound offers students academic skill development, college counseling and support, and motivation in order to excel in all aspects of their lives. Students meet on Saturdays during academic year and participate in a six-week program at George Washington University campus during the summer.
The NCLR Upward Bound Program maintains an innovative and nontraditional partnership consisting of a local community-based organization (The Latin American Youth Center, where the program is located), a major national civil rights organization (The National Council of La Raza), and a well-respected research-based university (The George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development). This consortium was designed to assist groups typically underserved by federal programs: Latino, language-minority, and immigrant students. Out of the four Upward Bound programs in the District of Columbia, the NCLR Upward Bound Program is the only program that specifically services the Latino population, and has also come to include a substantial African-American population. This unique collaboration and program model has facilitated success to the NCLR Upward Bound Program, for each partner brings their own expertise and resources to the program.
