The Supplemental Educational Services (SES) program aims to provide youth with academic support in the areas of reading, language arts, and mathematics to help them succeed in school and to become engaged learners.

The goal of the program is to offer tutoring services to children and youth from Kindergarten through 12th grade in the areas of reading, language arts, and mathematics. And also help them improve their overall academic motivation and performance.  Underscoring our project is the belief that academic success is critical for life success.  For that reason, the SES program seeks to enhance the instruction youth receive in DC Public Schools (DCPS).

Objectives

  • Instruct students in reading, language arts, and mathematics;
  • Create individual learning plans for each student that is grade-level specific and targeted to DCPS standards;
  • Mentor students to help build and raise self-esteem and motivate them to succeed in school;
  • Provide youth with enrichment activities that are designed to reinforce reading and math instruction.

Ongoing Support and Training

The tutors in the SES program will receive trainings sessions on the following topics:

  • Effective Tutoring;
  • Behavior Management;
  • Self-Esteem Building Techniques;
  • Classroom Management;
  • Diversity Training.

Requirements for Students

Must be a student in one of the target schools:

  • Harriet Tubman ES;
  • Bruce-Monroe ES;
  • Powell ES;
  • McFarland MS;
  • Deal MS;
  • Wilson HS;
  • Roosevelt HS.

Requirements for Tutors

  • Approval of Federal Work Study;
  • Police Clearance;
  • Tuberculosis (TB)Test.
  • Tutor Benefits
  • Federal Work Study Program;
  • Metro cards/tokens;
  • Trainings;
  • Tutor Recognition Awards.

School Year Program Hours

Monday-Thursday, 3:00-5:00pm, following the District of Columbia Public Schools’ Calendar
