On Saturday October 20, over 150 young people participated in the first "Clean Up – Green Up" sponsored by the Transforming Neighborhood Initiative (TNI) in Langley Park. LAYC/MMYC's Director Luisa Montero and its Langley Park AmeriCorps coordinator Sandra Martinez participated with AmeriCorps members. TNI is a county-wide initiative, created and lead by County Executive Rushern Baker and his executive team to improve the quality of life in six vulnerable communities. One of those six communities is Langley Park. The Langley Park team, directed by Betty Hager Francis, Deputy Chief Administrator, has been meeting for several months to carry out the Langley Park Team mission, which is to celebrate Langley Park's culturally diverse community and promote quality schools, safe neighborhoods, a thriving economy and quality healthcare by serving as a catalyst. Saturday's event was part of the plan. Volunteers helped clean elderly people's yards, picked up trash, pulled down signs from telephone poles and planted flowers. |
