Big Turnout at Leaders Like Me Parent Night Print

LAYC/MMYC's Leaders Like Me (LLM), a gang prevention program for high school students in Prince George's County's Northwestern and High Point High Schools, held a Parents' Night on December 14 at our Langley Park site.  Over 50 parents attended to learn more about LLM and the services LAYC/MMYC offers in the county. Leaders Like Me peer advocates, youth who have participated in the program and support new participants, spoke about their experiences in LLM.

Participant, Brenda Majano, read a poem of her inspiration titled, De Hijo a Padre (a letter from a child to a parent).

 

De Hijo a Padre

No me des todo lo que te pido.  A veces sólo pido para ver hasta cuanto puedo tomar.
Don't give me everything I ask for. Sometimes I only ask to see how much I can take.

No me grites. Te respeto cuando lo haces pero me enseñas a gritar a mí también y yo no lo quiero hacer.
Don't yell at me. I respect you when you do it, but you teach me to yell too and I don't want to do it.
 
No des órdenes. Si envés de órdenes me pidieras las cosas y lo haría más rápido y con gusto.
 Don't order me around. If instead you asked me nicely, I would do things more quickly and with pleasure.
 
Cumple con tus promesas, sean buenas o malas. Si me prometes un premio, dámelo; si es castigo, también.
Keep your promises, whether good or bad. If you promise me a prize, give it to me; if it is punishment, as well.

No me compares con nadie mucho menos mis hermanos.
 Don't compare me with anyone, especially my siblings.
 
    No me hagas lucir mejor que los demás porque alguien puede sufrir.
Tan poco me hagas lucir peor porque seré yo quien sufra.
Don't make me look better than others, because someone may get hurt.
Don't make me look inferior, because it will be me who get hurts.
 
No cambies de opinión tan a menudo. Sobre lo que debo hacer; mantén tu decisión.
Don't change your mind so often. When it comes to what I must do, remain firm.

Deja valerme por mi misma.   No hagas todo por mí, sino yo no podré aprender.
Let me find my way through life. Don't do everything for me, otherwise I won't learn.
 
No mientas delante de mí. Tampoco pidas que lo haga por ti. Aunque sea por sacarte de un apuro, me hace sentir mal y perderé la confianza en lo que dices.
Don't lie in front of me, even if it is to save face.  It makes me feel bad and I lose trust in what you say.
