For the third year, Annie Whatley, accompanied by husband Steve Whatley, visited the LAYC to meet with the youth her family generously supports through The Whatley Award for Excellence. The Whatley family is committed to supporting Award recipients who meet the above requirements throughout their undergraduate years. In addition, they plan to support at least one additional youth every year. "We will support each of the scholarship winners throughout their college years, and we plan to support an additional youth every year going forward," Annie Whatley said. This year's recipients were Lalaram Guyadin, Katisha Frederick, Akua Danqua, and Sandra Villegas. Lalaram participated in LAYC's Upward Bound program and has begun her studies at Howard University. Katisha was also a participant of LAYC's Upward Bound program and is currently attending Virginia Tech. Sandra and Akua attend Trinity College and have been receiving this scholarship for the past 3 years. The Whatley Award for Excellence was created by Christina Whatley, daughter of Annie Whatley, when she was still a college student. "Christina is very into giving back to the community, and it was her idea to single out the Latin American Youth Center," recalls her mother, Annie. The scholarship winners and LAYC are extremely grateful for the Whatley's continued support! |
