“The Latin American Youth Center can be thought of prosaically as a social services agency or more grandly as a modern settlement house kin to the centers of immigrant aid that arose more than a century ago.  The Latin American Youth Center has been pairing mentors and teenagers since 1968.  Once a humble affair, it now serves 4000 youths a year”.  Jason DeParle, The New York Times, Front Page, April 19, 2009.

Friends,

The Latin American Youth Center’s (LAYC) work was featured in a front page article in the Sunday, April 19, 2009 New York Times.  As part of the REMADE IN AMERICA series, reporter Jason DeParle followed one of our youth participants for many months.  The three page feature, highlighting LAYC’s work in Langley Park, Maryland offers and important and honest perspective about what some of our youth face in suburban communities across the country.  As you can imagine, having LAYC’s work highlighted in a front page New York Times article makes us all incredibly proud of our forty year history, and our transformational work with young people today.  Among the many important aspects of the article is the fact that it truly speaks to how essential LAYC’s work is to the community at large and specifically the immigrant community in our region.

The article also highlights the need for, and the difference, a caring adult can make in a young person’s life.  Recently, the LAYC created a new pathway for the most troubled youth.  Named the Promotor Pathway, this model ensures that there are staff who can work with the most troubled youth over a significant period of time to make certain they are connected to the services, supports and opportunities they need to become successful young adults.  As you read Jesselyn’s story, our Promotor Pathway, today represents LAYC’s new efforts to ensure her future success.  Today, Jesselyn has her GED, is gainfully employed, and continues to participate in LAYC’s programs and activities.
