LAYC is proud to report that Nicholas Eckenwiler's commentary about why he values his DC public school experience recently aired on WAMU.

The commentary was the first piece produced out of LAYC's partnership with YouthRadio, WAMU's Eighty-Eight Five's Youth Voices and Woodrow Wilson Senior High School. Youth Radio produced the piece in collaboration with its DC bureau at LAYC.

Nick was a student in classes that are run by LAYC's Art + Media House as a part of the Tiger Radio program at Wilson. Students involved with Tiger Radio learn to produce short audio documentary features and radio commentaries, and acquired the skills to deejay live radio shows.

During a class field trip to WAMU, Jim Asendio, the station's news director, spoke about his commitment to feature youth produced work and encouraged students to pitch stories and ideas. On the day of his graduation from Wilson High School, Nick's commentary aired; he took the opportunity to reflect on his high school years in DC public schools.
