Class of 2011

Class of 2011

LAYC/MMYC in Prince George’s County provides guidance and support to in-school and out-of school youth so that they can succeed in the workplace, advance their education and develop as leaders and active residents of their communities.  The program is funded by the Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation Youth Services Division through a Workforce Investment Act grant.

The Workforce Investment In-School Program engages low-income high school seniors during their final year of high school to help them successfully transition to higher education and the world of work.

The program accomplishes this by meeting individually with students and hosting monthly workshops to provide support with:

  • College applications
  • Scholarship and grant applications
  • Career exploration
  • One-on-one assistance to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and application fee waivers through a partnership with the University of Maryland Educational Opportunities Center.

During the summer, students can participate in a paid internship related to their career interests. Students receive job readiness training before and during the program to prepare and support students as they explore the world of work.

The job readiness training curriculum covers:

  • Resume and cover letter writing;
  • Interviewing skills
  • Goal setting
  • Life skills
  • Time management
  • Communication
  • Conflict resolution
  • Self-esteem
