Volunteer OpportunitiesLAMB relies on its parent community and the community at large to volunteer time, talent, and treasure. Volunteer involvement at LAMB has been a rich source of contributions to facility beautification and maintenance and overall school development. Youth and young adults from the Latin American Youth Center’s YouthBuild program have done landscaping at the Military Road School (LAMB’s future home). AmeriCorps members and volunteers from American University worked alongside staff and parents to enable LAMB to relocate to Bunker Hill Elementary School. Boost Mobile ROCKCORPS, WPGC 95.5 FM, along with rapper Fat Joe and 60 young volunteers, friends, families, along with LAMB board members, participated in a day of community service at Bunker Hill in August 2005 and after their work was finished enjoyed ice cream donated by the Latin American Youth Center’s Ben and Jerry’s Partner Shop. It was a unique way to inspire volunteerism and brought together local volunteers with national organizers to benefit a small school with a big dream of educating District children. LAMB’s parents are also engaged in activities to support and enrich the school. No one group of volunteers is expected to shoulder all of the responsibility. Rather, each family is asked to contribute volunteer time, and of course, financial donations are welcomed. There are currently seven active parent committees: Facilities, Library, Classroom Materials, Field Trips, Fundraising, Communications and Special Events. For more information about the work of the committees or to learn how to get involved, please contact LAMB parent Teresa Aspinwall at aspinwall@gmail.com or (202) 726-6200.
