Parents Make A Difference

As a charter school, LAMB knows that it cannot succeed without active engaged parents, so the school strives to work in partnership with parents to foster each child’s academic and social development.  LAMB organizes periodic parent workshops on Montessori educational philosophy and redirecting children’s behavior, as well as the dual-language educational model.  Parents are active volunteers in the classroom, reading stories, giving career day demonstrations or leading special art projects.

Outside of the classroom, parents are involved in various committees aimed at strengthening the school and there is an active parent listserv.  More than 90 percent of parents participate in school activities, and parents have planned school social events and fundraisers, including a book fair, Pennies for a Playground drive, and a Silent Auction and Fiesta in the spring of 2005 that raised more than $17,000 for the school’s building fund.

LAMB families get together at least three times a year for school-wide events celebrating milestones in the lives of the children.  Past events have included songs, dances and plays performed by LAMB students, and potluck dinners.

For school year 2005-2006, there are seven active parent committees:  Facilities, Classroom Materials, Field Trips, Fundraising, Communications, Library and Special Events.  For more information about the work of the committees – or to learn how to get involved, please contact LAMB parent Teresa Aspinwall at aspinwall@gmail.com or (202) 726-6200.
