WHO: LAMB Board of Directors, staff, students and 104 families will join community partners and invited public officials for this memorable ceremony. The program will include remarks from guests including Mayor Adrian Fenty (invited), Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser (confirmed) and ANC Representatives, among others. WHEN: May 18, 2007, 11:00 AM, Groundbreaking (rain or shine) and Children’s Day Celebration. WHERE: Latin American Montessori Bilingual Public Charter School BACKGROUND: Latin American Montessori Bilingual is the only chartered public, dual-language immersion Montessori school in the Washington metropolitan area and one of only a few nationwide. Chartered in 2001, LAMB’s mission is to foster bilingualism in a self-directed learning environment in which children build a foundation of knowledge essential for a lifetime of learning. LAMB is a unique program that empowers language minority students to maintain their mother tongue (Spanish) while they develop their skills in English, and language majority students to learn a second language while they develop knowledge of their own (English). On April 3, the DC City Council approved the sale of the building at 1375 Missouri Avenue, NW to LAMB, which enables LAMB to increase its enrollment and begin the second phase of construction: a 3 story, 12,000 square ft addition to the recently renovated historic school building. The addition will house classrooms, a cafeteria and administrative offices. It will include extensive site improvements and a new entrance to the school. LAMB will also unveil its fundraising campaign coordinated through Bricks-R-Us and the students will celebrate Children’s Day. An educational community creating a peaceful and accepting world.
