By Juan Callejas, Gaby Martínez, and Mary Jo Vásquez of the DC Prevention Center Wards 1 & 2
As a Community Mobilization Specialist at LAYC, Avery Gollinge is a key member of the DC Prevention Center (DCPC) team. She brings great passion to the work as she supports youth, families, residents, and service providers in the development and implementation of community-led substance abuse prevention initiatives.
For the past 3 years, Avery has ably supported the teams of local residents who manage DC Prevention Center Wards 1 & 2, supporting their action planning and community change efforts and providing technical assistance to ensure that these grass-roots programs can successfully implement evidence-based strategies to reduce substance use in their neighborhoods.
Avery understands the science of substance abuse and related risk and protective factors, and, as importantly, she excels at connecting with community representatives, bringing together people with diverse viewpoints, and ensuring that network members have access to the resources they need to reach their goals. Furthermore, she deftly tailors her technical assistance efforts to the specific research needs, objectives, and dynamics of each team.
Avery recently took the lead in planning her first prevention symposium and served as its moderator, with great reviews all around. From everyone on LAYC’s prevention staff: We appreciate you, Avery!
