“I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become.” – Carl Jung. This quote truly exemplifies Taji Lee’s story. Taji came to the LAYC/MMYC office in Langley Park when he was 17 years old, hoping to enroll in our GED/Workforce Development program. A few weeks in, MMYC staff realized that Taji was struggling with homelessness, a challenge many of our youth face. Taji was immediately referred to our Host Homes Program, where staff assisted him to meet his basic housing needs.
A collaboration between GED staff, Host Homes staff, and this incredibly determined young man enabled Taji to reach his goal of becoming a high school graduate, passing all four sections of the GED in just two months! He also has found employment and has mended his relationship with his family and moved home. Taji is a kind, warm-hearted, talented, and intelligent young man. It has been a true pleasure to work with him and watch him grow. We are beyond proud of Taji for overcoming loss, separation, homelessness, and many other obstacles to achieve his goals. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for this youth!
