Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) seeks a talented, detail-oriented individual with strong writing skills. The grant writer will be a member of LAYC’s development team and work in close partnership with the chief operating officer, director of grants management, and development staff to sustain and increase funding to support programming at LAYC. This position also works closely with staff throughout the organization, including program and management staff. On occasion, s/he will interact with the president & CEO, board members, and funders.

The most critical skill needed for this position is superior writing ability. The ideal candidate will be able to represent the needs of low-income youth in compelling ways and accurately describe LAYC’s program mix. Although the position has a heavy focus on writing, qualified candidates should have experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and willingness to engage donors and other supporters when necessary.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • In response to government, corporate, and foundation funding opportunities, write and revise grant applications in collaboration with program staff and manage all aspects of application submission for LAYC and potentially LAYC Career Academy.
  • Manage reporting process for funded applications, collaborating with program staff as necessary to compose and submit reports to funders.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge about LAYC programs and the financing of those programs.
  • Other duties as assigned by the chief operating officer and the director of grants management, such as participating in donor visits and special events and preparing development materials.
  • Participate in LAYC-wide events and programs as a representative of the development office.
  • Other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3-5 years successful grant writing experience required.
  • Demonstrated ability to write accurate, well-organized analytic and descriptive text.
  • Demonstrated ability to write about program objectives and outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and describe program budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to function in a fast-paced work environment and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct online research and use results in writing.
  • Experience working in youth development and knowledge of youth development programs and practices preferred.
  • Experience with multicultural populations preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Capable of working independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Apps.
  • Spanish fluency welcomed but not required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is largely a sedentary position that requires the ability to speak, hear, see, and lift small objects up to 10 lbs. May require the ability to travel locally and/or regionally.
